The FridgeArt app is the perfect way to save your kids’ art projects, but it’s important to have the right scanning conditions for the best results. While there isn’t a ‘best way’, controlling the following elements will go a long way towards improving your scans.
Lighting
It can be quite frustrating to discover glares and reflections on your new scans. But, with the right lighting, they will turn out better than you expected. Here’s how to limit glare and reflections:
- Use natural daylight and avoid artificial lighting (especially fluorescents) if possible. Bright lamps can cause annoying glares, so try scanning somewhere with a lot of natural light from a window.
- Avoid direct light, especially from overhead. Try to have your light sources to the left and/or right, instead of in front or behind your scanning station.
- Try changing the lighting angles, and possibly the location where you scan until you find the best conditions.
Speed
If you can’t keep up with your kids’ artistic output, you’ll likely want to quickly move through their projects. While it’s best to scan one item at a time, voice control allows you to scan item after item quickly. Just tap Done once you’ve scanned everything and each item will appear in your child’s locker.
Scanning orientation
The quality of your scans also depends on the environment around the item and how you hold your device for scanning. Make sure to follow these guidelines:
- Background - Use a smooth and even-colored scanning surface. Any color or material will do as long as the surface has the same (preferably solid) color.
- Angle - Hold your device directly above and parallel to your scanning surface.
- Distance - Take the closest possible shot of the item. It should take up as much space of the camera screen as possible while leaving narrow margins (at best) around the item.
